There are many different kinds of loosestrife in Michigan. One is bad - Purple Lososestrife, because it invades and takes over wet places. The rest are very nice and usually also live in wet places. Here is a nice one.

Supposedly there are no vetches on BBI. This is a vetchling. The indians ate the peas. The leaves are much narrower then Beach Pea leaves. I have seen these everywhere wet on BBI.

Last year I resorted to taking a picture of a Showy Lady's-slipper that was getting old and was inside a cage at my neigbors place. Today I lucked out and found a nice "uncaged" one.

Back behind some of those ponds in the Pte. Catosh area. This has buds ready to open. I might not get back before it is done flowering, or even find it again.

This is a picture of Linear-leaved Sundew glowing in the afternoon sun. It is that mass of light orange stuff on the beach. This is such a rare scene. A whole colony of sundew holding their leaves straight up. Usually they lay low and you have to bend over till your back aches looking for them. I have walked miles in either direction from this spot and saw no sundews. They are located in only a few other spots that I am aware of. There is also round-leaved sundew on the island.
I have noticed that the DNR has put up signs stating "no motorized vehicles on the beach". This is one example, that makes me agree with that action. I have found where the round-leaved ones were being run over in the past.

This hard to find and hard to see little orchid grows right on the beach where the sand stays wet all the time. It is not pretty but is interesting.

Go ahead and squeeze the stem if you see one of these and it will have a tacky feel to it. They are all over BBI in damp sunny places.

I see that I am repeating myself with this flower. I posted a nice picture of the flower last July 30. Type "asphodel" on the search page and you can find it. I have come full circle on the calender and now it will become much harder to find new flowers. _________________ mwhite@wildblue.net

Sometimes I don't have to travel far to find flowers. This is on the old dock at Sand Bay in front of my home. This is called purple because of the purple stems.

I went to the pond where I saw the little pond monster, but didn't find it. I did find two different orchids though. I hereby name the spot Sundew Pond. It has both round and linear leaved sundews there.
I think everyone will really like this one.

I'm sorry. I'm repeating again. I posted a picture of red clover in August last year. I need to search better before posting. _________________ mwhite@wildblue.net
