Currently, BISI Recycling Drop Offs are located at the Pines School and at the BISI cottage (2miles east of the twp dock). Signs are visible at the BISI cottage (the 90 degree turn before the bar).
The Recycling Bins on the Island will continue. BISI needs more barrels! Over the winter the BISI campground barrels served as recycling drop off barrels. Therefore if anyone has any information about obtaining more barrels please contact us (BISI@wildblue.net).
We will continue to run articles in the Review regarding the Recycling Drop Off. As always, we welcome community involvement with this and all projects. Fliers and posters are a great way to spread the word. We also need to raise awareness about crushing the recycled materials to save space.
The BISI Recycling Drop Offs are not affiliated with the Township or transfer station (although a partnership here would be ideal). All collected materials are taken off island by BISI volunteers and transported to the Emmet County Recycling Center, www.EmmetRecycling.org. RECYCLING IS FREE TO ANYONE ON THE ISLAND! Donations and volunteers are welcome.
Currently BISI accepts Plastics # 1, #2, Aluminum/Tin/foil, Clear Glass, Brown Glass and Green Glass.
Emmet County, see their website http://www.co.emmet.mi.us/dpw/guiderec.htm, offers a wide range of opportunities for materials to be recycled. For example, tires (for a $2.50/tire fee), batteries including car batteries, appliances, light bulbs and the list really does go on.
With support for the community to form a workable plan, BISI would be willing to expand the range of collected materials on the island.
We believe recycling is a critical component to the longevity of our community.
Here at BISI, we strive to be the change we wish to see in the world!
Thank you for being such a receptive and open-mined community. Together we can ensure the future of BBI.
Please do not hesitate to contact us for any reason, BISI@wildblue.net.

Unfortunately the recycling drop off will be discontinued. Due to the volume of materials and being under staffed/volunteered we are unable to maintain the drop off site effectively.
Have no fear! this is a good thing! it means islanders are recycling. Hooray! This also means less of the garbage being generated on the island is being landfilled on the mainland! Bigger hooray! Hats off to all of you making the effort to recycle.
So, what next? We send letters to the township board asking for a permanent recycling drop off site managed by the township. We have a plethora of evidence to support our claims. Furthermore, Cheboygan County has recently passed a program to begin a drop off site in Cheboygan. In addition, a non-governmental company, called ABC Recycling, based out of Cheboygan maintains a door to door recycling pick up.
There is plenty of evidence, use, accommodating businesses/local gov programs to make recycling on BBI a permanent reality.
Becoming a recycling community says a great deal about awareness on respect for the Island and the future of the island.
- BISI
p.s. In the mean time, keep recycling, call ABC Recycling in Cheboygan when you come to mainland and properly recycle your materials. There will also be a drop off site at GLENS very soon (sponsored by Cheb County) PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE YOUR RECYCLING AT THE OLD BISI DROP OFF. |

Thanks for giving it a go Jess! I hope that some sort of community drop-off site can be established, that will handle the necessary volume. Kudos to you, for your environmentally conscious efforts! Keep the ball rollin', and if there's any way the Duncan family can assist you, don't hesitate to contact us! Thanks again! Jeff Duncan _________________ West End Piper |
