Very rare plant.

Found on Round Island today, May 12, 2012.

Imported topsoil probably brought this European invader. It can be found on the west side of Pointe Aux Pins. Its a mustard with four tiny petals. Near the base of the plant can be found white hairs. Hoary means white haired.

It is amazing how you can walk right by something so RED. I didn't know that the cones of the Tamarack were like this when they first come out.

Supposedly not found on BBI by the professionals. At Swedes Bay, go inland to the marsh edge. The lateral petals have a "beard" with club shaped tips on the hairs.

The name fits the plant. Kind of rare. Found in the hardwoods in a wet depression.

Supposedly not found here, per MI Flora. Leaves are three hearts touching at the tips.

Beech tree roots are its host. When the beech trees go, so will the beech drops, I suppose. Found on the backbone ridge of the island, inland from the North Shore.

Round and linear sundew are common on Bois Blanc. It would make sense, if the two are found together, crosses would also be found. This rare event happens from time to time. The cross, called Xanglica, is sterile usually. This picture compares round with Xanglica.

Not common on Bois Blanc. It took me two years to find this one. The horn is horizontal under an arched lip. There are two other more common species on Bois Blanc, the Horned Bladderwort and the Flat-leaved Bladderwort.

Called birdsfoot because the seed pods together are shaped like a birds foot.

Let's see how long it takes for some wise member of this group to figure out what plant made this flower head. It stumped me for a while. No one guessed? Leek leaves die away and the flowering happens in July. Thousands in flower in the hardwoods of Round Island this year.

A rare breed of Goldenrod that Mike White showed me.

What can I say. These things are just so beautiful.

They grow on the beaches here and have no thorns. Rosa blanda

Hard to see unless the sun shines on the big lips of these flowers. Found, mid June, on the edges of the cedar swamps here, near mucky areas.

This is very early, even for this flower, here on Bois Blanc.

Picture taken in September. This is in the Mustard family.

There are white ones also called dolls eyes. These are the other kind. The flowers on both kinds are white and the only way to tell the difference is by the thickness of the flower stalks.
